This week’s theme is all about being there for your
significant other, regardless of the odds or circumstances. We all want someone
to count on through thick and thin.
Though we may not always have the right words, just being
there, holding a hand can make all the difference in the world.
In Carnal Beginnings, Adara is a young woman, kidnapped and
tortured by her cousin. Julien is the private investigator who loves and
rescues her.
Julien
shouldered his gun with shaking fingers. He’d dealt with victims before, should
know the words to say. Continued sobs drowned out the roaring in his ears. Her
entire bloody body shook. It took several tries before anything emerged from
his throat.
“Shhh,
Adara, you’re going to be all right. I’ve got you now.” Julien’s low voice
crooned in her ear as he stroked her hair. “Conner, you got the med kit?”
His
oldest brother crouched down by Adara and removed his gloves before stroking
her cheek. “Adara, you allergic to any medications, hon? I can give you
something for pain.”
She
sobbed.
“Adara,
you’re safe now. They can’t hurt you again. Look at me, hon.” Julien gently
turned her head to face him. “Sweetheart, are you allergic to anything?” She
shook her head.
“Okay,
hon. I’m gonna give you a shot. You’ll feel a little better in just a few
minutes. We’re gonna get you straight to the hospital.” Conner briefly closed
his eyes as he opened his medical bag. After giving her the injection, he
pulled out a bottle of brown liquid and a stack of gauze pads. With confident,
sure movements, he wet the pads and began cleaning the blood away from her
wounds. Nate and Marc unfastened her restraints.
Her sobbing momentarily ceased with a gasp each time Conner
touched a deeper laceration. Julien continued to stroke her hair, speaking
quietly in her ear.
Great snippet, well done!
