NYPD
Detective Gray Yates has major trust issues. Protecting a serenely beautiful
woman hiding enough secrets to take down an entire city wasn’t something he
bargained for. She’s a loving single mother, hot as hell, and protecting her
will test every ounce of his resolve.
Alex Romano
is being blackmailed by the Pyramid—an elusive international organization of
assassins every cop in the world is after. When Alex tries severing ties with
them they refuse to let her go. The darkly dangerous detective she’s irresistibly
drawn to is her only hope of staying out of jail. He just might be her
savior…or her downfall.
Despite
efforts to maintain his professionalism, Gray can’t deny the fiery passion Alex
ignites in him. In an explosive confrontation, Alex’s lies are revealed and
Gray is faced with the most important decision of his life: trust the woman
he’s falling in love with, or arrest her.

Gray drove in silence, watching the farmland give
way to thick forest. There was still a solid two hours before they reached
Hopewell Springs. His mind wandered to the damage the Pyramid could inflict on
a person’s life. They had murdered an FBI agent. How many others had they
killed in the decades since their inception?
“What?” Alex interrupted his thoughts. “You had a
look on your face just now. The same look you always get when you’re annoyed
with someone.”
Gray glanced at her. “You know me so well?”
“Well enough.” She laughed, a melodic sound he’d
come to love. “You get that look when someone is sitting at your desk and won’t
talk.”
“You’ve been watching me?” Gray was pleased at the
thought. He watched Alex constantly. Then again, all the detectives did. Hard
not to.
“Well, I—I notice you from time to time.” A
becoming shade of rosy pink tinted her cheeks, making her face even lovelier.
“So tell me what you were thinking just now.”
“I was thinking about how the Pyramid will always
be able to find someone they can exploit. There will always be someone out
there who, whether it’s due to financial need or just plain greed, will betray
anyone or anything.”
“You mean the way you think I betrayed the
department...and you personally?” Alex’s voice was hard.
Gray glimpsed anger in her eyes. Anger directed at
him for not believing her. They were at an impasse, he realized.
He didn’t trust her. He honestly didn’t know
whether she’d used him or not, but he was certain she was still hiding
something. Problem was, she didn’t trust him with whatever she
was hiding.
He returned his eyes to the road, but not before
seeing her lean her head back against the headrest and shut her eyes tightly.
She inhaled deeply and let it out on a long sigh. If Gray hadn’t been driving,
he’d have done the same.
Fate had thrown them together with the tantalizing
possibility of a life together.
Circumstances had irrevocably torn them apart.
Alex Romano is a single mom—and an incredibly strong woman.
After fleeing from her husband when pregnant, she started a new life on the
opposite coast. Keeping to herself, she makes ends meet the best she can,
despite her son developing leukemia.
Gray Yates is a prototype for a hot alpha male. He’s also a
detective, emotionally scarred from a tour in Afghanistan. His job now as team
leader in his NYPD precinct, is to bring down a terrorist group called The
Pyramid.
This was a delightful mix of suspense and romance. I was
immediately drawn to each of the main characters, the depth of their feelings
for what they loved and would die to protect. The passion between them felt
real and at times heartbreaking.
Interaction between two of the supporting characters, Dom
and Daisy, was also incredible, and I hope their story is next.
This book was very well written by an author with a
distinctive style. Transitions were smooth with a plot that moved forward at a
great pace. Great attention was given to every aspect of the plot without glossing over or inundating you with
details.
The book reads fine as a standalone, but once read, you’ll
be addicted. Fair warning – don’t start the book at night – you won’t sleep.
I would highly recommend this author and hope to read more
from her soon.
